Hadley-Murphy PTC hosts "Farewell Celebration" at the Hadley campus on June 10th

The Hadley-Murphy Parent Teacher Committee invites all Hadley Alumni and the Hadley community to a “Farewell Celebration” at the school from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on June 10th.

The Hadley campus of Hadley-Murphy Elementary School is closing after 50 years of service at the end of the current school year.

Festivities, which include building tours and a hot dog supper, are part of the event.

Murphy students, parents get preview of new facilities at the future Rolland Warner campus

Students in the fourth and fifth grades at the Murphy campus of Hadley-Murphy Elementary School and their parents paid a visit Wednesday, May 27, to the new facilities they will be attending at the opening of classes in the fall of 2009.

Hadley-Murphy Principal Scott Warren, Superintendent Debbie Thompson, Director of Transportation Jerry Podzikowski and Food Services Director Scott Smith were on hand to answer parents’ questions and take a tour of the new facilities.

Next year’s fifth and sixth grade students will attend classes in what will be the 6th grade wing of Rolland Warner Middle School when it opens in the fall of 2010 as a middle school.

The Lapeer Community High School students who are currently studying in the facility will move to their new campus at Cramton in the fall of 2009.

The District’s 7th grade students next year will attend classes in the soon-to-be-completed 7th and 8th grade wings of the facility.

Calling all golfers! More teams and golfers wanted for Hadley-Murphy annual outing

Calling all golfers! The weather is improving and there is room for more golfers and more teams for the Saturday, May 9th Hadley-Murphy 8th Annual Tee-Off for Technology Golf Scramble.

Tee off will be a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. at the Lapeer Country Club at 3786 Hunt Road in Lapeer. Registration will be at 7:30 a.m.

The cost is $75 per person and $300 per team. The cost includes 18-holes of golf with cart, coffee and donuts, steak dinner, a gift bag and t-shirt.

There will be lots of great prizes both during and after the golf outing, including first and second place prize money and various on course skill contests, closest to the pin, longest drives a Vegas hole and more.

Dinner at E.G. Nick's on May 3rd to benefit Hadley-Murphy Elementary School

A dinner at E.G. Nick’s on May 3rd will raise money for special programs at the Hadley-Murphy Elementary School.

The dinner out at E.G. Nick’s at 825 S. Main Street in Lapeer will be held Sunday, May 3rd from noon to 9 p.m. Diners who present a coupon from Hadley-Murphy will have 20 percent of their purchase go to the school.

Hadley-Murphy sets 8th Annual Tee-Off for Technology Golf Scramble for May 9th

A golf outing on May 9th has been scheduled to help raise money for technology at Hadley-Murphy Elementary School.

On Saturday, May 9th the Hadley-Murphy 8th Annual Tee-Off for Technology Golf Scramble will tee off at the Lapeer Country Club at 3786 Hunt Road in Lapeer. Registration is at 7:30 a.m. and a shotgun start will be a 8:30 a.m.

For teams who register by April 24th, the cost is $70 per person or $280 per team for the 4-person scramble. After April 24th the cost will by $75 per person and $300 per team. The cost includes 18-holes of golf with cart, coffee and donuts, steak dinner, a gift bag and t-shirt.

Hadley-Murphy scores from lunch, dinner and snack sales at Buffalo Wild Wings

A special Hadley-Murphy Elementary School fund raiser is planned Thursday, April 2, at Buffalo Wild Wings, 770 N. Lapeer Road in Lake Orion.

The popular restaurant is donating back to the school 20 percent from its all day sales when customers mention the school when ordering or present a coupon available through the school.

The coupon is good at lunch, dinner, snack or take out orders, but only on Thursday, April 2nd and only at the Buffalo Wild Wings in Lake Orion.

Free Buffalo Wild Wings kids meals have been given out as awards during "March is Reading Month" activities at the school and can be used during the fund raising event.

Hadley-Murphy Family Literacy Night draws 250 students and parents on March 24th

A “Reading is Out of This World” event at the Murphy Elementary School campus drew about 250 Hadley-Murphy Elementary students and family on Tuesday, March 24th.

The event, which included "fireside" classroom reading, was part of the "March is Reading Month" events throughout the District.

Students and parents also participated in book making events at the school. In addition the Family Literacy Center of Lapeer was on hand with some of its great programs.

Students and parents read by flashlight around campfires while other students chose to read by flashlight inside tents set up in classrooms.

Murphy students learn recycling lessons: Turning household trash to art

Third grade students in Mrs. Amy Duncan's class took on a challenge from their teacher to make something new or artistic out of garbage and junk collected at home.

"We learned how reusing and recycling are all important for the environment and how vital our role is in reducing the amount of waste in our landfills," said Mrs. Duncan.

Each student received a signed certificate from Mrs. Duncan and "Mother Earth" in recognition of their efforts.

Hadley-Murphy hosts "Chili & Dogs" dinner fund raiser on March 20th

Supporters of Hadley-Murphy Elementary School have found a great diversion from winter and cabin fever with a “Chili & Dogs” dinner at the Murphy campus on Friday, March 20th, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

In addition to great food and fun, there will be a 50/50 drawing and a chocolate sale.

Money raised from the dinner will help eliminate some of the door-to-door fund raisers and continue to provide worthwhile projects for the school, such as busing for field trips, scholastic learning magazines, student scholarships, assemblies, science and art fair awards, classroom allowances, education materials and much more.

“It’s also just a fun way to bring the community together for a night out,” said Debbie Bridges, one of the event’s organizers.

The dinner, which will be catered by E.G. Nick’s, will include a main menu choice of chili, minestrone or a hot dog. All dinners will include salad, breadsticks and a beverage. Tickets are $5 and children 2 and under are free. Tickets will be sold in advance and at the door. The 50/50 raffle tickets will be sold the night of the dinner for $1 each or 6 tickets for $5. There will be no carry out orders.

Hadley-Murphy to collect books for literacy groups

Donations of new or gently used books will be collected at either campus of Hadley-Murphy Elementary School between March 16th and March 23rd as a school project to help two literacy groups.

Books collected during the drive will be donated to the Family Literacy Center of Lapeer and Ethiopia Reads. The Family Literacy Center is a local non-profit organization that helps adults learn or improve their reading and assists school-age children and their parents to improve reading and literacy.

Ethiopia Reads is a non-profit organization focused on improving the lives of Ethiopian children by fostering a love of education through the use of books.

The books can be for children or adults, fiction or non-fiction, but should be in good condition, said Lisa Schultz, a parent volunteer who is coordinating the drive. Cash donations will also be accepted and used for the cost of shipping books as necessary.

“We invite the community to support this worthy cause and drop your spare books off at either school during the week of March 16th to March 23rd,” Schultz said.
