Morgan Kelly, Lapeer Community High School’s top senior, recently participated in the recent Thumb Works Community and Education Day activities.
Morgan participated with other top seniors from Huron, Lapeer, Sanilac, and Tuscola Counties in a roundtable discussion that was moderated by the keynote speaker for the event, Mr. Jim Winter, a former educator and successful business owner from Chicago.
“Morgan did a great job representing both Lapeer Community High School at Cramton and LCS!,” said Lapeer Community High School Principal Kevin Walters. “We are proud of her and her accomplishments as an outstanding example of the quality student that is produced from all three high schools in the district.”

Lapeer Community High School gets new facility, leader for 2009-2010
Lapeer Community High School, a vital program of Lapeer Community Schools, will enter the year 2009-2010 with a new building and a new leader.
Kevin Walters, former principal at Lapeer West High School, was selected to be principal at the alternative high school in its new location at the remodeled facilities at Cramton.
Tim Zeeman, recently the assistant principal and athletic director at Lapeer West High School, will serve as acting principal of Lapeer West High School during the 2009-2010 school year. A new assistant principal will replace Zeeman.
Walters, who has a wealth of experience dealing with at-risk students and recent administrative leadership experience, will bring those valuable assets to Lapeer Community High School.
In his 15-years at LCS, Walters has been a teacher, an elementary school principal and principal at West since 2005. He has a Bachelor’s and Masters degree from Central Michigan University.
Zeeman joined the District in 1996 taught English at Lapeer East until 2005 when he was appointed assistant principal and athletic director at Lapeer West. He has a Bachelor’s degree from Albion College and a Master’s degree from Marygrove College.
“Lapeer Community High School serves a critical role in the education of a unique, but important, group of students in our District,” said Superintendent Debbie Thompson. “We need a leader at Lapeer Community High School who can build and improve the important mission of that school.”
“Tim Zeeman’s appointment to the acting principal position will provide the excellent leadership at Lapeer West High School,” Mrs. Thompson said. “Tim brings his own wealth of experience in the District, community and in leadership at Lapeer West High School.”

Zemmer Junior High student, Braydin Walters, chosen for U.S./Canadian hockey team
Braydin Walters, a Zemmer Junior High School student, was recently selected to play on the Border City Bandits, a blended U.S. and Canadian hockey team. The team consists of players from Ontario and Michigan and will compete in elite AAA tournaments over the next three years during the spring and summer.Scouts from the team identified Braydin and scouted him for a year before contacting his parents, Kevin and Candi Walters. Kevin Walters is principal at Lapeer West High School.
Braydin was recently named Most Valuable Player of the 2009 Bantam Spring Showcase Tournament in Port Huron.
Last season, Braydin scored 50 goals and had 28 assists (78 points) in 41 games.
“Braydin has been very blessed to be offered these opportunities at such a young age,” said Kevin Walters. “Candi and I are truly proud of him.”

Lapeer West peer tutoring program to be showcased at Michigan Capitol
An innovative program at Lapeer West High School that partners proficient math students with students struggling with the subject has caught the attention of a Statewide organization that wants to showcase the program for State legislators on Thursday, March 26.
The Guided Academics Peer Tutoring program was spearheaded and implemented by Lapeer West Math Department Chairperson Kristen Wilcox.
West Principal Kevin Walters, Mrs. Wilcox and three students, two tutors and one guided academics student, were selected by the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals to come to the Capitol and share the program with Legislators.
Jeremiah Welch, Stephanie Osip and Angie Marku are the three students accompanying Mrs. Wilcox to the Capitol.
“The program has produced outstanding results and fits perfectly within the vision of innovation in delivery of rigorous curriculum,” said West Principal Kevin Walters.
At the end of the first trimester, the math department identified 24 students, nearly all freshmen, who were struggling with Algebra 1, the first in a series of new graduation math requirements under the Michigan Merit Curriculum.
Instructors then identified 20 high achieving Calculus and Pre-Calculus students, some with an interest in an education career, and paired them with the struggling Algebra 1 students each day during the same hour.
“The algebra students gained tremendous self-confidence, and the upper class students learned how to explain math, step-by-step as a classroom teacher would,” Mrs. Wilcox said.
