A total of 68 students at Lapeer East and West high schools won statewide awards in the 2011 Michigan Industrial & Technology Education Society (MITES) competition.
The industrial arts entries by the Lapeer Community Schools high school students numbered more than 80 projects ranging from a book case and a belt buckle to a bike rack and a Yo-Yo.
Several students submitted multiple projects and earned multiple awards.

East cagers earn trip to summer basketball camp
East High School basketball players Jeff Wells and Aaron Hirsh have both been dedicated to basketball since they were old enough to dribble a ball, and their hard 
work apparently has paid off. The two teens will spend a week this summer getting a good look from college coaches at a national competition in Ohio.
Wells, a senior, and Hirsh, a junior, were both standouts on the court this year for the Eagles. Wells, a small forward, averaged 10 points a game, and Hirsch, a point guard, averaged nine points a game and four rebounds. They will compete in the USA Junior Nationals competition July 18-24, which includes a free-throw contest, a three-point contest, and then pool play, where they will battle for a spot in the championship game.
Both qualified for the summer camp after attending a tryout of hundreds of high school players from Michigan and Canada on the Eastern Michigan University campus in early April. The competition in July will be loaded with Division II and junior college coaches and scouts, who will be looking for players to help bolster their programs.
“I went there and played not knowing if I could really make it, and in the end, I did,” Wells told a newspaper reporter last week. Wells says he is hoping this will give him an opportunity to play at the collegiate level this fall. “It’s exciting and fun,” said Wells, who also hopes the experience will earn him a basketball scholarship.
Hirsh still has a year left at East, but he also hopes that the scouts will see something they like when he takes to the hardwood at the summer camp. “It’s good to play against tougher competition. This is a lot tougher than the Metro League,” Hirsch said. The big difference: “Everyone’s a lot taller.”
The USA Junior Nationals is considered the top amateur high school basketball competition in the United States. It is viewed as an entry level to international competition and for high school athletes looking for college basketball scholarship opportunities. It is designed to serve as a gathering point for promising young players in an atmosphere of intense competition. Players who rarely are exposed to big time spring/summer competition go toe-to-toe with players of equal or superior skills.
Both students are working hard to save money for their summer trip. Each has to pay registration fees as well as transportation and lodging costs for the July competitions.

East's Burke signs to play at Concordia

A Lapeer East Eagle will become a Cardinal in the fall as senior Jacob Burke signed his national letter of intent to play football at Concordia University.
Burke will play wide receiver at the next level in the Pistol Spread Option offense, which has four wide receivers on the field at all times. Though the offense is relatively new, the coaching staff at Concordia believes they can put Burke in position to make plays with the ball in his hands and believes he is a perfect fit for a student-athlete at Concordia.
The senior also played in the defensive backfield for the Eagles on defense and was a part of the basketball team. Burke chose Concordia over other schools that included Albion College, Adrian College and Siena Heights University.
He selected Concordia over the other schools because he liked the campus. He believes his biggest challenge as he moves on to college athletics will be preparing for the better competition he will face and how much time football will consume in college.
The intended communications major is excited about meeting his new teammates and facing new competition at his position in a bid for playing time.
Lapeer East coach Jake Weingartz said he believes Burke will have no problems translating his game to the collegiate level. “Jake has great athleticism and he is an overall playmaker on the field. He made a lot of plays for us this season. He was a big reason we were as successful as we were this season,” Weingartz said.
“He will be a very productive wide receiver in college,” Weingartz added. “He will have to get in the weight room and continue to get bigger, faster and stronger, but there is no reason he won’t have a successful four years.”

East bowler rolls her first 300

Justice Schihl, a 16-year-old junior at Lapeer East became the first female and first youth bowler to roll a perfect game at Gerlach’s Bowling Center on Feb. 10.
Shihl was bowling during the East high school league, putting her up for Metro League honors. She fired a 176 and 193 in her first two games for a 669 series. She’s been bowling since the fourth grade and is three-year varsity player for East. Brother Austin also bowls for East as a sophomore.
"The closest I’ve ever come to 300 was a 235," Schihl told the View Newspapers Monday as she watched a brand new banner announcing her accomplishment go up above Lanes 3 and 4, where she had been bowling last Thursday. "I knew I was close when I had seven strikes in a row," she added. "I was nervous, but kept it all inside. Everyone was starting to circle around the lanes to watch."
Schihl credits her dad for getting her involved in bowling and she also plays tennis on East’s junior varsity squad.
"I like that (bowling) is all you," Schihl explained. "If you mess up, it’s all on you."
To celebrate, Schihl was taken to dinner by her mom, grandpa and boyfriend.
‘This is just a special accomplishment and I’m going to try to just let that stand as I prepare for the Baker match and then Regionals on Feb. 25," Schihl added. "I especially want to thank my grandpa, mom and stepdad, Tony, for supporting and paying for my bowling.”
Commenting on Schihl’s accomplishment, East coach Anthony Novick said, "I’ve had her for two years. She works hard, is at every practice and is a team captain. She is a leader on the squad and helped the team tie for second place in the Metro League. She made Second Team All-Metro, her first time for the accomplishment. Because she’s just a junior, it will be nice to have her back next year. She’s a good listener, and that helps in her bowling."
The banner that now hangs at at the bowling alley reads: Justice Schihl bowled 300 on 2-10-11. First Female ever @ Gerlach’s Bowling Center.

Parent volunteers needed for 'Your Time'
Parent volunteers are needed for the "Your Time" After School study hall at Lapeer East High School.
The program runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school from 2:15 to 3:15 pm.
National Honor Society students are available to help with any issues that a student needs help with, and students have access to all elements of the East media center including books and computers.
Any interested parent may contact Parent Vounteer Bill Gavette at wmgavette@gmail.com, or call 810-417-1559.

Lapeer East girls will ‘Volley for A Cure’
Once again the Lapeer East Volleyball team is hosting a “Volley For A Cure” match against Linden on Tuesday, October 19th, at Lapeer East High School. The game tips off at 7 pm.
This year the team will donate the money to the charities of their wishes: two families that had daughters play on the Lapeer East volleyball team.
Jessica Knapp’s mother, Kathy, lost her battle to breast cancer this past June. Evie, Kari, and Lisa Dinsmore’s dad, Steve, lost his battle to stomach cancer this past August. At the game the team will honor both families and the memory of each of their parents.
Sponsors of the fundraiser include Dr. Aaron Fisher, DDS, Dr. Albert Smith Jr. and family, Dr. John Yap, Lapeer Medical Associates, Mott Community College, Ray C’s and Speedy Screen Printing.
Volleyball team members will sell T-shirts for $10.00 each to raise funds for this occasion.

Lapeer East Girls Golf Coach is Regional Coach of the Year
Lapeer East Girls Golf Coach Steve Stearns has earned Regional Coach of the Year honors after his team finished second Oct. 7 in Regional play hosted by Lapeer West at Lapeer Country Club.
Coach Stearns has led both the girls and boys golf teams at Lapeer East for the last six years, and prior to that was the golf coach at Lapeer West for two years. The honors came from a vote of the 11 coaches whose teams participated in the Regional tournament.
This year’s second-place finish in Regional play is the best showing for the East girls golfers.
“All of the credit goes to the girls. They were the ones who won that. They made me look good by playing well,” said the coach.
“I really was surprised,” said Stearns of the honor. “I had a lot of fun watching the girls play and perform well.”
Stearns, a business and co-op teacher at East, is in his 27th year as a teacher in the Lapeer Community Schools. During that time he also has coached junior high and junior varsity football for 25 years. He is an avid golfer and spends his summers working at Devil’s Ridge golf course in Oxford.
The Lapeer East girls team shot 378 to earn a second-place finish and its first trip the State Finals. The MHSAA Girls Finals Tournament takes place on October 15-16 at Forest Akers West (MSU) in East Lansing.

Lapeer West girls led the field at the MHSAA Regional Girls Golf Tournament Oct. 7 for the second straight year, followed by Lapeer East who finished second. Both West and East golfers qualified for a State Finals appearance.
The Regional matches were hosted by Lapeer West High School at Lapeer Country Club. West turned in a team total of 373 to finish first in the tournament.
The Panther golfers were led by Senior Kim Brown with an 86 (good for 4th place and a Personal Best), followed by Junior Haley Byard with a 93 (10th place and Personal Best). Lindsay Yateman chipped in with a 96 and Freshman Tori Carlson had a 98. Sophomore Kate Carlson shot a 107.
The Lapeer East team score of 378 earned a second-place finish and earned the team a trip to its first State Finals. The MHSAA Girls Finals Tournament takes place on October 15-16 at Forest Akers West (MSU) in East Lansing.

Discounts for athletic tickets
Students and parents can cheer their favorite teams to victory and save money as well by purchasing a Lapeer Community Schools athletic Punch Card.
The cards are priced at $25 and can be used to purchase $50 worth of admission to school sporting events. That’s a 50% discount.
Each card provides 50 punches, worth $1 each, when paying for admission at the gate. The punch cards can be used on any school sporting event within the Lapeer Community Schools, including all high school and middle school athletic contests.

Meet Mr. Scott Roper, Lapeer East's new Principal
Mr. Scott Roper, Principal at Brown City Junior/Senior High School for the past five years, is the new Principal at Lapeer East High School.Current Lapeer East High School Principal Kelly Paige is retiring at the end of the school year.
Mr. Roper’s education career began as a middle school teacher in Danville, Illinois 13 years ago. Later he became a middle school teacher, then high school teacher and basketball coach at Schoolcraft Community Schools near Kalamazoo.
He obtained a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Western Michigan University and a Bachelor of Science Degree with a Major in English from Illinois State University. Mr. Roper also serves on the Board of Directors for the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP) and committees for the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA).
In addition to enjoying his family and friends, Mr. Roper is a fan of the outdoors and enjoys hunting, fishing, snowmobiling as well as landscaping, gardening and a recent interest in golf.
“I am a big fan of high school sports and activities, and I look forward to supporting the students at Lapeer East in their various programs of interest,” Mr. Roper said. “Lapeer Community Schools has many great traditions including its commitment to academics.
“It is evident that there is a dedication to provide a school environment which promotes academic, social, and emotional growth. I look forward to collaborating with the staff, students, parents, and community members of Lapeer East in our quest to raise student achievement and promote life-long learning through opportunities which inspire and challenge our students to reach personal, academic, social, and career goals.”

East, West golf coaches offering a summer 2010 Lapeer Junior Golf League
Varsity golf coaches from Lapeer East and Lapeer West High Schools, Mr. Steve Stearns and Mr. Mike Ogg, are offering the 2010 Lapeer Junior Golf League for young people, ages 10 through 17, who live or go to school in Lapeer County starting June 18 at the Lapeer Country Club.
The total cost of the league is $50 and includes eligibility to play in six qualifying rounds to enter a season tournament. The tournament will be set up in flights depending on the number of entrants per division. Golfers must play at least three qualifying rounds to be eligible to win the Net divisions of the tournament.
Qualifying rounds will be played at the Lapeer Country Club on Fridays, June 18, June 25, July 9, 16, 23, and 30. The tournament will be played on Friday, August 6, with a rain date of August 13. Tee times will range from 6:30 a.m. to 7;30 a.m. and participants should be at the course 20 minutes ahead of their tee time.
The parent/guardian of each participant is asked to be available to observe at least one qualifying round.

The total cost of the league is $50 and includes eligibility to play in six qualifying rounds to enter a season tournament. The tournament will be set up in flights depending on the number of entrants per division. Golfers must play at least three qualifying rounds to be eligible to win the Net divisions of the tournament.
Qualifying rounds will be played at the Lapeer Country Club on Fridays, June 18, June 25, July 9, 16, 23, and 30. The tournament will be played on Friday, August 6, with a rain date of August 13. Tee times will range from 6:30 a.m. to 7;30 a.m. and participants should be at the course 20 minutes ahead of their tee time.
The parent/guardian of each participant is asked to be available to observe at least one qualifying round.

Students sew dresses for Africa as class project
Lapeer East eighth grade sewing students have been finishing up a final exam project that will mean something to their grades, but more to some young girls in Africa who will be the beneficiaries of the hand made pillowcase dresses made by the students.Last year’s students created about 60 of the dresses, but this year’s students will make and ship about 100 of the creations for the http://www.littledressesforafrica.org/ project.
The sewing students are working in teams to ‘fancy up’ the pillowcases with lace, ribbon and bows. Students must use many sewing skills, like elastic casings and making armholes to finish the dresses.
“This is a wonderful way to test the skills of my students and perform a worthwhile public service project at the same time,” said Lapeer East Life Management teacher Miss Terry Brennan.

Three Lapeer sports teams advance in the post season
Lapeer East girls' soccer and boys' baseball continue their already successful seasons. Last night the girls' soccer team defeated Warren Regina in a thrilling 1-0 match. The Flint Journal has great photos and a story. The team now faces a tough challenge facing Birmingham Marian Thursday night in the Regional championship game. Photos and story in The County Press.
Lapeer West softball defeated Lapeer East and Grand Blanc last Saturday and advanced to the next level Saturday, June 12, against Flint Kearsley. The County Press has some great coverage as well.

Swing Out 2010 - Photos
Photos of Swing Out 2010 are now posted on the District's photo gallery. This nearly 80-year tradition continued with graduates from Lapeer East, Lapeer West and Lapeer Community High School marching through town and being greeted by friends and family.

Lapeer East High School art students honored for work at Michigan Arts Festival
Lapeer East High School junior Hillary Davlin and senior Ayla Asawasathaporn were honored at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival in Kalamazoo May 13-16.
Hillary was chosen as one of the artists in the State of Michigan to exhibit art as part of the traveling Governor’s Art Show in 2010-2011.
Ayla’s artwork was honored as being among the top 100 pieces judged from around the State.
Students from all over Michigan, including the Upper Peninsula, sent pieces to this competition. Each teacher submitted five pieces for judging.
“I am proud of the work done by Hillary and Ayla and of this very special recognition,” said Mrs. Debbie Helbig, the students’ art
teacher.

Lapeer East Project Graduation looking for help from parents of juniors and seniors
Here's an appeal from the Lapeer East Project Graduation committee:
East Junior and Senior Parents,
We are hosting the now annual Lapeer East Project Graduation. This event is an alcohol and drug free way for the graduates to party as a class one last time. In the past, and hopefully for our night, students have each received a gift bag containing various promotional items. The students are also entered into a raffle, which we hope to collect enough to have a prize for each student. They arrive around 10:30 PM, check in and we lock the doors at 11 PM.
Students are required to RSVP and if not checked in our principal calls home to inquire why and where they are. While at Project Graduation, the students are confined to a specific area of the building, but we have rented inflatable activities; laser tag, a photo booth, a horse derby and a mechanical bull, some casino tables, possibly a euchre tourney with prizes, and hired a DJ. At 3 AM or so, they will be gathered into a common area and entertained by a hypnotist. Then at 5 AM they go home. We have a graduating class of 244 and are expecting about 200 students at this time.
We are setting up for our event on Friday, June 4 at 7:00 for 2 or 3 hours (the more people the quicker it will go). This will be moving tables and chairs, setting up the hypnotist's stage, staging the food service with non-perishables, setting up the DJ table, and setting up the casino area. If you'd like to help out on June 6, instead, you are more than welcome, and you may attend the event for helping on either day. We need lot of volunteers to help set up and chaperone this event. Food set up will be Sunday, June 6 at 10:00 PM. On Sunday, we need help at the casino tables and maybe some carnival type games too, and of course food serving and security detail.

Four Lapeer East High School student-athletes celebrate decision to head to Adrian College
A quartet of Lapeer East High School athletes are headed to Adrian College to attend classes and play sports.Joined by family, friends and high school coaches, four Lapeer East High School athletes celebrated their decisions to go to Adrian College on Tuesday, May 25, in the East Media Center.
Adrian College’s football team will have the largest representatives from Lapeer East with three players from last year’s Eagles’ squad going to the Bulldogs. Eric Rieves, Anthony Hunt and Sebashton Sullivan have made commitments.
“I urge you, as you did in high school, to keep your focus on your classes and then work hard in your sport,” said East football coach Jake Weingartz.

Also going to Adrian College is Casey Donovan a standout Lapeer East volleyball player.
