Murphy Elementary School is hosting its 4th Annual Lotza Pasta dinner on Friday, November 5th, from 4:30-7:30 pm at Murphy Elementary School in Metamora. This all-you-can-eat pasta dinner will be catered by Italia Gardens in Davison.
The funds raised at this event enable the PTC to pay for assemblies, busing for field trips, student scholarships, classroom allowances, science and art fair awards, magazines, supplies and equipment for our students throughout the school year.
The menu includes all-you-can-eat mostaccioli (with buttered, meat or marinara sauce), salad, bread, beverage and dessert.
Advance tickets are available until November 3rd, $7 for adults, $5 for kids, and children 3 and under eat free. Tickets at the door will be $9 for adults and $7 for kids. There will be a drive-through carry-out again this year.
The Murphy PTC hosts its dinners to eliminate the need for door-to-door sales for fundraising. “We love having the community get together at our school for a fun night out.”
Along with an amazing dinner, the evening includes a raffle, silent auction table and a 50/50 drawing. Many local businesses have been very generous and donated some great items! Raffle and 50/50 tickets will be available at the dinner.

Murphy Elementary set to "Tee Off for Technology" at annual golf scramble in May
Spring and warmer temperatures signal that it’s time for the 2010 Murphy Elementary School’s 9th Annual Tee-Off For Technology Golf Scramble.
Teams and sponsors are being sought to compete in the event on Saturday, May 8 at the Lapeer Country Club. Early registration is suggested as the event usually ends up with a waiting list. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
Last year’s outing enabled the school to purchase online programs for students, helped fund the summer school program, updated Murphy’s studio equipment and allowed the school to continue to purchase age appropriate software to complement curriculum.

There will be plenty of prizes, both on and off the course. Cost of golfing is $75 per person or $300 a team. The price includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, coffee and donuts, a steak dinner and a t-shirt.
Prizes include first and second place money, a Vegas hole, a hole-in-one prize, Skins game, longest drives, closest to the pins, 50/50 raffle and raffles for several great golf courses and other door prizes.
Non-golfers are invited for lunch for $15, or buy a t-shirt for $10. A wide variety of sponsorships are available.

Coach Mandy hopes to expand after school running program to all elementary schools
Successful after school Running Clubs at Murphy and Mayfield Elementary Schools may be expanded to all District elementary schools in 2010-2011.
Currently at Murphy, 61 students participate in the program, which started in October and meets after school each Thursday. The Mayfield program meets on Wednesday and currently has 52 students signed up for its program.
On nice days at both schools, the running is done on a track behind the school and on more inclement days, students run in the front parking lot under adult supervision.
The running program is coordinated by Ms. Mandy Jo Rindhage, who has children at Murphy and Lapeer West.
“I would like to expand the running clubs to all of the Lapeer elementary and middle schools for the 2010-2011 school year,” said Coach Mandy. “With only five days a week and nine buildings, I’m going to need some help.”
Volunteers are being sought to help start programs at all the buildings. To receive more information or to help start a running club at a school, contact Coach Mandy at (810) 449-8340 or at mandyjo@fitnessbymandyjo.com. There will be a small charge for these programs.

Science Alive brings critters to visit at Murphy Elementary at Rolland-Warner
The always popular Science Alive made a visit to the Murphy Elementary School students attending classes at Rolland-Warner Middle School on Wednesday, February 24.Mr. Bill Neill introduced the students to the world of exotic and endangered animals and even let those who wanted get a "hug" from a very large python.

Lapeer's top spellers heading to county bee
Three more elementary schools found their best spellers in contests Tuesday, February 16, and Wednesday, February 17. Now those students will begin preparing for the countywide spelling bee.
At Schickler Elementary, fifth-grader Kylee Roberts won the bee Tuesday when she correctly spelled “enfranchise.” Second place went to fifth-grader Paul Gregor. Both will represent their school at the county level. Sixth-grader Kaylee Fenslau was third and will compete if Kylee or Paul are unable to attend.
Jocelyn Jones was named top speller at Elba-Seaton Elementary School after she correctly spelled “suburban” in a competition with 11 of her classmates. Fifth-grader Alex Craig was named alternate for Elba-Seaton.
Jocelyn said she studied the word list provided by her teacher to prepare for the bee. While she felt ready for the competition, she said she was still nervous, especially about spelling in front of an audience of other students.
“It’s harder for me to spell out loud than it is to write it down,” she said. “So I wasn’t sure what letters were coming out of my mouth.”
Alex said she has a trick for calming her nerves: “When I get nervous, I just go to my happy place.”
At Murphy Elementary at Rolland-Warner Middle School, sixth-grader Jessica Pantone won her school’s bee Wednesday when she correctly spelled “patience.” She and fifth-grader Lydia Bontrager will represent their school at the county bee. Fifth-grader Isabella Mirza was named alternate.
Jessica said she studied for the bee by writing words from a study sheet onto index cards. Her plan to prepare for the county bee? “More index cards.”
Lydia said she also studied, but spelling wasn’t the difficult part of the contest — speaking in front of an audience was. “If you look at the crowd it makes you even more nervous,” she said, adding she focused on the judges instead.
The students join those already selected at other schools to attend the countywide bee. Sixth-grader Cody Cruce and fifth-grader Hope O’Neill will represent Mayfield Elementary. Allison Vestbjerg will represent Lynch Elementary. Maple Grove holds its bee today, February 17.
The countywide competition will be Thursday, March 18 at Rolland-Warner Middle School.
The spelling bees, occurring in schools across the country, eventually will determine the competitors for the National Spelling Bee to be held in June in Washington, D.C.

Handmade scarves, a gift from Murphy students to Lapeer Count ISD students
Second and third-graders in Mrs. Traci Chouinard's Murphy Elementary School classroom worked on scarves for special needs students at the Lapeer Intermediate School District's Education and Technology Center on Friday, December 11th.Material for the hand made scarves were obtained by Mrs. Luann Best, who also volunteered to help students make them.
"We thank Mrs. Best very much," Said Mrs. Chouinard.

Are you ready for L-o-t-z-a P-a-s-t-a? Popular Murphy all-you-can-eat fund raiser is Friday
Murphy Elementary PTC will be hosting our annual all-you-can-eat pasta dinner on Friday, November 20th from 4:30-7:30 PM in the gymnasium at Murphy School on Pratt Road. Many items donated from local businesses & merchants will be raffled off. There will also be a silent auction and a 50/50 drawing.The PTC is trying to raise money to fund projects for the school. Monies raised will provide assemblies, busing for field trips, classroom allowances, student scholarships, science and art fair awards, scholastic learning magazines and equipment for our students throughout the school year.
A successful dinner will allow us to eliminate some of the door-to-door sales that we ask of our Murphy Families and will provide needed items for our students. This will also give our parent’s pocketbook a much-needed break, as well as bringing the community together for a fun night out.
Our dinner will be catered by Italia Gardens and will include all-you-can-eat mostaccioli (with sauce or buttered), salad, bread, beverage and dessert. Pre-pay tickets are $7 for adults $5 for kids and 3 and under is free. Tickets sold at the door are $9 for adults and $7 for kids. If you’re in a hurry or too tired to get out of your car, a drive-up carry out is available again this year. All raffle tickets will be available that night. Everyone is welcome! Murphy Elementary participates in "Coats for Kids"
An effort to collect new, or ‘gently’ used, winter coats, snow pants, hats, gloves, mittens and boots will be held at Murphy Elementary School, 1100 Pratt Road and at Rolland-Warner Middle School, 333 DeMille Boulevard, where fifth and sixth grade Murphy students are attending this year.
The collection, part of the “Coats for Kids” program will begin on Monday, November 9th and end Friday, November 13th. All sizes of clothing are needed.
A collection box will be located near the offices at Murphy Elementary School or Rolland-Warner Middle School.
The winter clothing will be redistributed through the Coat-Give-A-Way program at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 90 Millville Road in Lapeer. Clothing will be given out on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon, now through December 19th, except for Saturday, November 28th. Appointments to receive clothing are also available by calling the church at (810) 664-6653.
Anyone with questions about the program can contact Lisa Schultz at (810) 797-5537.

Annual Murphy "Fund Run" provides exercise and resources for school activities
Students at Murphy Elementary School participated in their annual Fund Run on Tuesday, October 6, 2009.Each year students seek pledges and then run laps on a course behind the school to help raise money for school activities.
Each grade participates for about 45 minutes with the help of parent volunteers and teachers.
