The Lapeer Community Schools Board of Education has decided to continue to operate Seaton Elementary School for the 2011-12 school year.
The Board voted Thursday evening to keep the school open during the next school year, 2011-12.
In its resolution, the board stated the building will close at the end of the 2011-12 school year unless the enrollment at Seaton is at least 300 students as of February 2012, or the district-wide K-5 enrollment on February 1, 2012 is at least 2,400, or a revised facility master plan is developed for the District.
The school, located on Coldwater Road in Oregon Township, has a current enrollment of 288 students in grades Early 5 through 5th grade.

Music classes get an online assist
Elementary music students in Lapeer Community Schools are getting a chance to take a musical expedition that covers everything from music theory to dance, and a whole lot of learning in between.
The program source is Music Express magazine, which comes with worksheets, CDs, and interactive online web programs. Students get a chance to explore the world of music and get a chance to perform the lessons – which includes singing and playing instruments along with an added measure of history and geography.
Elementary music teacher Stephanie Harrington explains that teachers get a new edition of Music Express every two months. The lesson comes with 30 student magazines, a teacher's magazine and a CD with all the songs, artist interviews and articles on it.
Harrington says this year’s theme for the magazine is Rock and Roll with a little country thrown in.
“The really neat thing about the magazine is that there is an online website with extra resources such a choreography to some of the songs (it is actually taught and performed by the magazine’s creator, John Jacobson)” Harrington said.
There are mini lessons to go along with the world music section of the magazine. “This section contains information such as the geography of the country, customs, dress, music and dance,” she added. “I am currently presenting the song from Liberia, and at the end of the mini lesson there is a lesson on how to play djembe drum.”
The music department owns several djembe drums, and 4th grade students at Seaton Elementary recently got a chance to play the djembe with instructions provided via the online video.
The Music Express program is being used throughout the District in 1st through 6th grade music classes. Different aspects of the magazine are geared toward different age levels. The teacher's magazine includes keyboard accompaniments, choreography notes, instrumental parts, activities, columns and articles and full-length lesson plans.
The accompanying CD provides vocal and instrumental versions of each featured song, plus listening selections
“The program is great,” said Harrington, and it appeals to a wide range of music knowledge – everything from classical composers to the Black Eyed Peas.

Creative Seaton kids raise money for United Way
Seaton Elementary students put their creativity to work last week to raise money for United Way. Their efforts raised $75 to support United Way programs in Lapeer County.
The contest highlight was the judging on Oct. 22 for the Most Creative, Funniest, Scariest and Best Animal in each grade, Kindergarten through 5th grade.
There were smiles aplenty, and two dozen pumpkins emerged as the best in the crop.

A fresh, new look for the Seaton playground
Anthony Novick takes parental involvement seriously. His son, Joey, is a student at Seaton Elementary, and he wanted to do his part to help brighten the learning environment.
His crew from Color Wonders Painting rolled up to Seaton on Saturday, Oct. 16, to freshen up the playscape at the school.
With a bit of scraping and sanding and a healthy application of paint sprayed carefully from a large bucket, the Saturday-morning volunteer efforts brightened up the playground equipment and the basketball courts.
The paint company owner was joined by his wife, Jody, daughter Katie and employees James Keyes and Nathan Surbrook, as they added a bit of flair to the playground structures, recoating them in a popular “Seaton orange” color.
Novick’s crew was joined in the effort by Seaton parent Laura Fromwiller and daughter Renee.

Lynch, Seaton Elementary Problem Solving competitors head for MSU event April 17
Two teams of students from Lynch Elementary and four teams from Seaton Elementary School and several alternates have been invited to participate in the annual Michigan Future Problem Solving Program State Bowl at Michigan State University in East Lansing on Saturday, April 17 and Sunday, April 18.
The Lapeer elementary school team will compete with members of 92 of the top teams Michigan.
Lynch team members, Alicia Birkenhauer, Alexis Mosher, Trey Lubonski, Jacob Schlaud, Allison Johnson, Anastasia Mausolf, Rachel Compton Megan Bopra, with alternates, Abby Horning, Steven Romolino, Paul Ankley, and Shelby Metzger, and Seaton team members, Sam Boddy, James Felton, Sierra Wineman, Brittney Potter, Nicole Tomczyk, Carley Heathcock, Sarah Ridenour, Kara Daniels, Hannah Somerville, Jocelyn Jones, Matthew Brey, Zachary Fritz, Brooklyn Withey, Olivia Card, Greg Schabel, and Katie Sinka, with alternate, Lauren Barber, and their coach, Stephen Larzelere-Kellermann travel to MSU.
The State Bowl is the culmination of a yearlong program where students are taught to creatively seek, attack, and solve problems related to projections into the future. An estimated 1,000 Michigan students worked on three problems during the 2009-2010 school year – Invasive Species, Sensory Overload, and Orphaned Children, which were scored and critiqued by trained evaluators.
Based on the third problem, 92 of Michigan FPSP’s teams across three grade divisions (4-6, 7-9, and 10-12) have been invited to participate in the State Bowl. While teams know the general topic of this year’s Bowl – Food Distribution – they will not know the specific nature of the problem they will attempt to solve until the Bowl begins.
Solutions will be evaluated on clearly established criteria, and the top five teams from each division will receive trophies. State Champions will also be invited to represent Michigan at the 2010 International FPS Conference at the University of Wisconsin in LaCross in May. In the past years, Michigan participants have won 25 championships at the International Conference.

Seaton hosts Art Show and Ice Cream Social event to highlight accomplishments
Hundreds of students and their families and friends enjoyed a wonderful night of art and ice cream at the Art Show and Ice Cream Social event on Thursday, May 14th.The entire school was turned into an art gallery that included a student dressed and portraying famous artist Vincent van Gogh. There were tours of an art garden and a gymnasium gallery.

Seaton students visit R. Michael Supernault Outdoor Education Center
It was the sixth-graders, in Mr. Cory Hoggard's Seaton Elementary School class, turn to visit the R. Michael Supernault Outdoor Education Center on Thursday, April 30th.Students from around the District have been making their spring trips to the beautiful 80-acre, District owned outdoor classroom in Oregon Township.
Recent rains have filled the ponds and wetlands and the students at one point were greeted by a pair of nesting Canada geese.
Mr. Al Hoppe, the teacher at the outdoor center, led the students on a hike to various ponds and wetlands to collect a variety of spring specimens, such as frogs eggs, larvae and insects.
Back at the center, it was time to sort them out by scientific classifications and then look at them under a stereo microscope in one of the cabin classrooms at the center.
