Sydney Gavan bone marrow drive draws 150-plus

A Saturday morning bone marrow registration drive attracted more than 150 people who signed up to see if they were a match for Sydney Gavan, a Mayfield Elementary School student, who was diagnosed with leukemia.

The "Be The Match" fund raiser was the most recent of several events hosted in Sydney's behalf.

Bone marrow drive on June 20th to honor the 6th birthday of Mayfield's Sydney Gavan

A new bone marrow donor drive is being held from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, June 20th at the offices of Todd A. Courser & Associates, PLLC, 455 S. Main Street in Lapeer.

Members of the community who are between the ages of 18-60 and in good general health are invited to join the "Be the Match Registry" in honor of Sydney's birthday and as a gift to her and her family, and thousands of patients like her, by increasing the chances of finding the match they desperately need.

The first 232 (increased since the video below was produced) test kits will be offered free of charge, thereafter they will be offered for a discounted fee of $25 which covers the cost of lab fees. Tax-deductible donations of any size will be accepted and appreciated for those with the ability to pay.

Eddie West concert on May 29th to benefit Mayfield kindergartner Sydney Gavan

An Eddie West benefit concert, the first in more than a year, will help raise money for bone marrow drives in honor of Sydney Gavan, a Mayfield Elementary School kindergartner who was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Sydney is currently awaiting a bone marrow transplant, but to date there is currently no match.

The concert will be at 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 29th, at the Lapeer Country Club, 3786 Hunt Road, in Elba Township. Admission is $10 and will include the concert, a chance at some door prizes and a 50/50 raffle. All money earned will go to the SPG Fund (Sydney Page Gavan) for the National Bone Marrow Registry.

Eddie West is a group of musicians composed of current and former staff and students of Lapeer West High School, friends, and family members. The band performs songs from Motown, classic rock, to current hits.

Bone Marrow drive for Mayfield Elementary School student set for Saturday

A bone marrow drive will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, May 16th at Mayfield Elementary School, 302 Plum Creek Road in Mayfield Township to help find a donor for kindergarten student Sydney Page Gavan.

The school held a successful fundraiser for Sydney Friday night and invites anyone between the ages of 18 and 60 to come Saturday to see if they are a bone marrow donor match for Sydney.

Participants will be asked to fill out a brief health questionnaire, submit to a painless mouth swab and be in general good health. A $25 tax deductible fee is requested to pay for the processing, but financial aid is available to potential donors who need help paying the fee.

Mayfield sponsored spaghetti dinner to help support student with leukemia


A Spaghetti Dinner, hosted by Mrs. Caitlyn Pascoe’s kindergartners, will be held on Friday, May 8th, 2009 from 5-8 p.m. at Lapeer East High School, in honor of their classmate – Sydney Gavan.

Sydney was recently diagnosed with leukemia and is currently awaiting a bone marrow transplant.

Please join the Mayfield community for a fun evening of spaghetti, a silent auction, and child-friendly inflatables. For those not able to stay, take-out is available. Admission is $5 per person at the door, with children under 3 eating for free. All proceeds from the evening will support Sydney.
