Lapeer East grad Zac Walters scores high at National Skills USA competition in June

Zac Walters, a 2009 Lapeer East High School graduate, placed 9th out of 36 in the national Skills USA competition in Kansas City, Missouri in late June.

Zac, who attended the Lapeer County Intermediate Schools Education and Technology program placed first at Regional and State competitions to earn the right to compete at the national competition in the electronics technology division.

The competition involved written and practical application tests and hands on events to examine the skill level of thousands of competitors from around the United States.

At the State competition in late April in Lansing, Zac scored 905 out of 1,000 points and was 105 points higher than the closest competitor in winning the electronics technology competition there.

This fall, Zac plans to attend Oakland University in the electrical engineering program.

Zac discovered his interest and skill at electronics two years ago at the ISD’s Education and Technology Center and appreciated the instruction and courses he took there.

At Lapeer East, Zac, in addition to his regular studies, played the tuba in the Marching Band all four years. Zac started his education career at Maple Grove Elementary School in kindergarten.

“I appreciated that my studies at the Education and Technology Center let me work at my own pace, while continuing my studies at Lapeer East,” Zac said. “I thank God and my instructor, Stu Glenn, for helping me in the competitions.”

This summer he has already participated in a church mission trip. Zac lives in Mayfield Township with his parents, Sue and Darrin Walters.
