Three middle school artists earn state honors

Art work by three middle school students from Lapeer has been selected to be featured in the MAEA (Michigan Art Education Association) art exhibit in June.

Out of thousands of pieces of art from all over the State of Michigan, two Lapeer students were chosen to be in the top 100 and one student is in the top 15.
Zemmer Middle School student Samantha Schlaud’s work is among the top 15, and work by Madison Skene of Zemmer and Brooke Soroka of Rolland-Warner are among the top 100. They are students of Zemmer art teacher Marty Norton and Rolland-Warner art teacher Lisa Reinert.

“The MAEA show is the ‘big’ state exhibition and has very strict guidelines,” notes Norton, “and it is a great honor to have artwork chosen for display.”

The middle school students’ art work will be on display at the Michigan Historical Museum and Library, 702 West Kalamazoo, in Lansing from June 5-11. The art work exhibit is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m.

The Michigan Art Education Association is a non-profit organization affiliated with the Michigan Education Association and the National Art Education Association. Its purpose is to define and establish the role of art education, to give support to creative teaching, and to foster study and research in art education. MAEA considers it both a privilege and responsibility to showcase the exemplary work of the talented children of Michigan.
