West and East athletes are good sports

Good sportsmanship continues to be a high priority among Flint Metro League schools.

Instances of unacceptable sportsmanship are rare among league members, due in large measure to the proactive work of FML athletic directors and coaches. Positive reinforcement of outstanding sportsmanship continues with the league's long-standing recognition program. Every FML coach is asked to name the league opponent that showed the best sportsmanship during the recently concluded fall season.

Nine varsity teams from Lapeer high schools -- five at Lapeer West and four at Lapeer East -- were selected by opposing coaches for showing the best sportsmanship for the fall season of 2010:

At Lapeer West:
Volleyball (selected by three opponents)
Boys Cross Country (selected by two opponents)
Girls Cross Country (selected by one opponent)
Girls Swim (selected by one opponent)
Boys Tennis (selected by one opponent)

At Lapeer East:
Girls Cross Country (selected by three opponents)
Boys Soccer (selected by two opponents)
Boys Tennis (selected by two opponents)
Girls Swim (selected by one opponent)

For these teams to be considered the “Best of the Best” in sportsmanship by any opponent is noteworthy. Being chosen by more than one opponent is exemplary.

Congratulations are in order for these Lapeer East and Lapeer West athletes and their coaches on a job well done this fall season.

Lapeer West hosts Metro League schools at "Kids Against Hunger" food packing event

A few dozen students from nine Flint Metro League schools were hosted in the new Lapeer West High School auxiliary gym for a food packing project to benefit hungry people locally and around the world.

Working as a food packaging assembly line, the high school students from Brandon, Lapeer East, Lapeer West, Clio, Fenton, Holly, Kearsley, Linden and Oxford, packed 10,000 nutritious meals in about an hour Tuesday morning for the “Kids Against Hunger” project.

“A third of the meals will be used locally for people in need, a third will be sent to struggling nations overseas and a third will be kept in storage for use during natural disasters,” said Michael E. Burwell, Executive Director of “Kids Against Hunger.”

The meals combine dried vegetables, rice, soy and chicken flavoring into bags that contain six meals.

Before beginning the students, all members of their home schools’ student councils, watched a film on how “Kids Against Hunger” works to stem hunger internationally.

“It is a worthwhile program and we were proud to be the host for this year’s food packaging event,” said Ms. Hollie Marcola, high school guidance secretary at Lapeer West. “Our students appreciated the opportunity to be part of this community service project.”

Lapeer East, Lapeer West athletes honored as All-League athletes in Flint Metro League

A total of 50 Lapeer East and Lapeer West High School winter athletes were named to All-League Flint Metro League teams.

Ten of the selections were for the first team, 13 were second team picks, 3 were third team selections and the balance were honorable mention selections.

First team All-FML selections were: Competitive Cheer – Lapeer East, Meagan Lloyd; Lapeer West, Alyssa Ruhlman, Leah Seaman, Paige Smith and Crissy Wills. Swim (combined East-West) Alexander Hart (100 butterfly). Wrestling – Lapeer West, Aaron Secrest. Girls’ Basketball – Lapeer West, Marisa Liburdi. Boys’ Bowling – Lapeer West, Jeff Acton. Boys’ Basketball – Lapeer East, Payton McCallum.

Second team All-FML selections were: Hockey – Lapeer East, Jason Collins and Steve Tadazak. Competitive Cheer – Lapeer West, Katilynn Anderson and Ashley Kennard; Lapeer East, Cassie Ciaravino. Girls’ Bowling – Lapeer West, Hannah Gauthier. Boys’ Bowling – Lapeer East, Bradley Whittaker. Wrestling – Lapeer East, Isaac Joseph, Cameron Myers and Justin Green. Girls’ Basketball – Lapeer East, Cassie Diaz; Lapeer West, Lindsay Thams. Boys’ Basketball – Lapeer West, Joe Lerma.

Students from East, West win high honors at FML Math/Science event at Holly High School

Performances by Lapeer East and Lapeer West math and science students added up to success at a Flint Metro League Math/Science Competition held at Holly High School on Wednesday, April, 21.

Ten teams participated in the event with Lapeer East finishing fourth as a team and Lapeer West also exhibiting some great individual performances.

Individual students from each school won medals in math and science competitions.
Math winners from Lapeer West High School were Scott Essenmacher, junior, who placed first in Pre-Calculus and senior Brad Deane who placed third in Calculus.

At East, Kaleb Elwert placed first in Chemistry Lab; Ben Moyer placed first in Biology; Nick McHardy finished second in Physics Lab; third place finishes were scored by Brianna Banowski in Physics; Austin Johnson in Physical Science; and Aaron Moskal in Biology Lab.

East students who finished out of the medals were: fourth place; James Apfel, in Chemistry, Emily Roberts, in Algebra I; Andrew Schroeder, in Algebra II; seventh place; Lindsey Weisler in Trigonometry; eighth place; Dayton Harmon in Geometry, Tom Nichols in Statistics, Michael Puskar in Calculus; ninth place; Alexis Nichols in Pre-Calculus.

Lapeer West to host "Kids Against Hunger" food community service program on April 27

The Flint Metro League Student Council’s will host “Kids Against Hunger” at Lapeer West High School on Tuesday, April 27.

Students from all ten Flint Metro League schools, including Lapeer East High School, will be on hand to help package highly nutritious meals for area food banks.

It is anticipated that the students will pack 10,000 meals from 9-10 a.m. in the West gym that day.

“This is a worthwhile event that involves our students in a positive community service project,” said Hollie Marcola, counseling secretary and advisor to the Lapeer West Student Council.

The Lapeer Swim and Dive Team places third at FML meet, qualifies two for State Finals

The combined Lapeer Swim Team finished third at the Flint Metro League meet Saturday. Two Lapeer swim and dive team members qualified to compete at either the regional or State Finals later this month.

Lauren Barnes qualified for diving regionals and Emily Shallman qualified for 2 individual events at the State meet (100 fly & 100 Free) based on her times at the FML meet.

Lapeer East, Lapeer West Athletes named to Winter sports All-League teams

A total of 48 Lapeer high school athletes were named to Flint Metro League 2009 All-League teams in winter sports.

Three Lapeer East High School wrestlers, Phillip Joseph, Matt DePuy and Travis Cushaway were named to the All-League First Team in wrestling. Lapeer West’s Dakota Carie was named to the All-League second team.

Lapeer West wrestler Nate Irelan and Lapeer East wrestler Ryan Springsteen were named to the All-League third team.

In boys’ basketball, Lapeer East’s Payton McCallum and Lapeer West’s Landon Warren were named to the All-League second team. East’s Sam Achtabowski and West’s Dan Cox were honorable mention All-League players. Dan Cox was named as a Flint Metro League Scholar-Athlete.

Lapeer West’s Dani Schoenherr was named to the girls’ basketball All-League first team and West’s Bridget Miller was named to the All-League second team.

West’s Emily Jones and Lindsay Thams were named as honorable mention All-League players. Jones and Thams were also Flint Metro League Scholar-Athletes.

Jeremy Podgorski, a Lapeer West hockey forward, was named to the All-League first team and Lapeer East’s Drew Steinhouse, forward, and defenseman Brent McClain were named to the All-League second team.

Hockey honorable mention players were: Lapeer East, Brad Lile and Steve Tadazak and Lapeer West’s Jeremy Cugliari, Josh Milosek and Jacob Podgorski.

Four Lapeer West competitive cheerleaders, Laura Ayan, Erin Delisle, Leah Seaman, and Crissy Wills; and two East competitive cheerleaders, Heather Champion and Taylor McGuffie were named to the All-League First Competitive Cheer team.

Second team members on the competitive cheer team were: East’s Dillynn Bryant and West’s Ashleigh Hutton, Ashley Kennard and Caitlin O’Brien. Honorable mention cheer team members were: East’s Maurisa Lopez and West’s Paige Smith.

Garrett Gauthier, of Lapeer West, was named to the 2009 boys’ All-League first team. Second team All-League members were Christian Graham, of Lapeer East, and Jeff Acton, of Lapeer West. Honorable mention All-League bowlers were: East’s Zach Lyerla, and Bradley Whittaker and West’s Tyler Shamaly.

The 2009 girls’ bowling All-League team included second team selections Crystal Eckel, of Lapeer West and Dawn Wesley, of Lapeer East. Two West girls, Hannah Gauthier and Kaitlyn Dowdall, were named to the All-League second team.

Three Lapeer East girls, Jessica Lansing, Crystal Belland and Justice Schihl, were named as honorable mention selections.
