School is ending for the year, but Lapeer Community Schools will not close the doors on those who need help getting nutritional meals.
The district will provide free breakfast and lunch at two locations on weekdays to all people 18 and younger beginning this month and continuing into August. The only exception is no meals will be served on Monday, July 5. The schedule for meals is as follows:
Rolland Warner
June 21 to Aug. 20
Breakfast: 7:15 a.m.- 8:30 a.m.
Lunch: 10:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Lapeer Rec Center June 14 to Aug. 20
Breakfast: 8:15 a.m.- 9:15 a.m.
Lunch: 11:15 a.m.- 12:15 p.m.
All meals are free to all individuals 18 and under, whether or not they attend Lapeer schools. Parents may drop young people off or can stay and eat with them for a small charge. Breakfast for adults is $1.50 and lunch is $2.50
The program, funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, is designed to ensure young people have nutritious meals throughout the summer and comes during a particularly difficult time for Michigan’s economy and workers.
This is the third year for the free summer meal program. In its first year, the district served more than 12,000 breakfast and lunch meals during the summer months

Who says there is no such thing as a ‘free’ lunch?
A challenge from the Board of Education to the District’s food service department to find ways to help students and their parents during difficult economic times has resulted in an additional 613 students receiving free lunches at school.
Beginning last Monday, March 1, the District’s Food Service Department extended free lunches to the 613 students who had been receiving reduced cost lunches. The free lunch program continues through the end of the 2009-2010 school year.
In addition to the 613 reduced lunch students, the District already provided 2,149 students with free lunches. The District has an enrollment of 6,387. Before Monday, lunches cost 40 cents a day for students in the reduced lunch program.
The District previously opened up a free breakfast program to all students, regardless of income, at all District elementary schools and the students at Zemmer Junior High School attending at Rolland-Warner Middle School.
“In addition to saving reduced cost lunch students up to $2 a week, the free lunch program is really aimed at encouraging children to eat a nutritious hot lunch every school day,” said Mr. Scott Smith, Director of Food Services in the District. “The Board of Education is committed to helping our families during this difficult economic time. A good breakfast and lunch contributes to better learning.”

Free breakfast, lunch program continues through summer
A free weekday breakfast and lunch program for people 18 years old or younger is currently feeding about 160 per day, but there’s room at the table for a lot more, said Scott Smith, Director of Dining Services at Lapeer Community Schools.
For the second consecutive year, the Food Service Department of Lapeer Community Schools is offering free breakfast and free lunches to those 18 years or younger.
The program, which is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, comes during a particularly rough economic period in the State. The summer started out slowly, but increased considerably with the start of summer school, Smith said.
The free meals are available at Turrill Elementary School, 785 S. Elm Street, or at the City of Lapeer Recreation Center, 880 S. Saginaw Street, to anyone meeting the age requirement. There are no geographic or economic requirements. A young person does not have to be enrolled in any LCS programs to receive the free breakfast or lunch.
