About 400 Lapeer East High School students showed up at 4 a.m. to fill the gymnasium with bodies, spirit, food and donations to assist the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. Between cash and food donations the students and Lapeer East High School donated more than 33,000 pounds of food to the Food Bank, nearly double the amount from last year's event.
Talent show winners and the East teachers "Mock Rock" group warmed up the crowd for the television show.

Due to concerns over a possible nationwide outbreak of the H1N1 virus, Lapeer Community Schools has been asked by the Lapeer County Health Department to more closely track the reasons for student absences this year.
According the LCHD, influenza, or the ‘flu,’ is often misdiagnosed. For example, there is no such disease as “stomach flu.” Illnesses involving no appetite, nausea, upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea is most likely gastroenteritis, which is an inflammation of the stomach caused by a variety of viruses, or less commonly, bacteria.
“True flu,” is a disease that begins in the upper respiratory system, similar to a cold, with fever, body aches and pains. The disease moves quickly down the chest where it becomes bronchitis or pneumonia. A “true flu” lasts about 7 to 10 days and makes a person feel miserable.
There can be nausea, vomiting and diarrhea from the flu in infants and small children caused by mucous draining down the backs of their throats into the stomach.
As a result of the LCHD memo, parents should be alerted to a series of questions we have been asked to inquire about when a child calls in sick so the LCHD can track the disease.
· Does the child have a fever? How high? · Is the child sick to their stomach, in the bathroom a lot? · Are they congested, achy, feeling and acting droopy or sick? · Have they been around others with the same symptoms? The LCHD has also asked that students not return to school until they have not had a fever for 24 hours without taking any Tylenol or other fever-reducing medicine. There are common sense ways to help prevent the spread of the disease:— Cover your mouth and nose, preferably with a tissue, when you cough or sneeze. Immediately dispose of the tissue after its use.— Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.— Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth to help prevent the spread of germs.

A WJRT-TV 12 reporter and cameraman were at Lapeer East today to talk about the high school's selection to the Newsweek.com's Top Schools list this week.
The segment was scheduled to air today during the 5 p.m. news broadcast. Update 8:35 p.m. - here's the link to the broadcast.
The selection is based on the size of the school, the size of the graduating class and Advanced Placement test taking and performance.
Reporter Kelley L. Dickens interviewed Assistant Principal Mike Hobolth in the East media center and also interviewed East teacher, John Moliassa, who was attending the Advanced Placement Summer Institute program at Lapeer East last week and this week.
Mr. Moliassa teaches Advanced Placement Statistics and Advanced Placement Calculus at the school.

The first wave of students from Zemmer Junior High School to visit the R. Michael Supernault Outdoor Education Center this week were expected to be the subject of an ABC news segment today.
Students from Zemmer will be visiting the Skinner Lake outdoor center in separate groups all week. In the photo at right, instructor Al Hoppe is interviewed by Channel 12 reporter Randy Conat. The segment was expected to run about 5:30 p.m.
In addition to four science stations, students will be working on English Language Arts, math, art and physical education classes at the 80-acre, District-owned center.
It was an exciting morning as Lapeer East High School was honored with the top 5 schools in the ABC 12 School Spirit Cup Challenge.
Lapeer East, which led the competition for several weeks after collecting 17,000 pounds of food for the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan ended up in fourth place.
It was Lapeer East that set the bar very high for the later schools.
Students from East were interviewed and will likely be shown on the news this afternoon. So far there is no link on the Channel 12’s website, but we’ll keep watching and put it up here when it does. It is now available here.
Three students who worked with a food service worker at Lapeer East High School Tuesday were interviewed today for separate news segments on WJRT-TV, Channel 12, and WNEM-TV, Channel 5.
Chris Iloncai, James Richie and Emily Miller each performed the Heimlich maneuver on a student in the cafeteria when food became lodged in his throat.
The Channel 12 broadcast is scheduled for the 5 p.m. news tonight (Thursday, May 7th) and the broadcast date and time for the Channel 5 interview, is a little less clear, but supposed to be on Friday.

The latest tally on the donations by Lapeer East High School to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan is 17,162 pounds of food. So far, East is ahead of all the schools. You can see all the donations of all the schools at the website for the Food Bank.
