College Night 2009 set for October 19th at East

Lapeer East High School’s “College Night,” an event that has been popular with hundreds of area families each year, is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, October 19th at the high school, 933 S. Saginaw Street in Lapeer. (Photo from the 2008 event)

Organized by East’s counseling staff, the College Night event is a one-stop shopping chance for students and parents to get information about dozens of colleges and universities, including nearly all of Michigan’s public and private post-secondary education programs.

Last year’s event included 56 post-secondary education programs, including community colleges within an hour radius and many technical schools. Many out-of-state colleges and universities also participate in College Night.

Lapeer East counselors will also present sessions on financial aid, college applications and testing.

A dream come true!

Students filed into the new Rolland-Warner Middle School this morning as classes began for Zemmer Junior High School at the new facility.

Aside from a few students who needed help finding a classroom or working their new lockers all went well today.

Students from Zemmer Junior High School will be attending classes at the Rolland-Warner Middle School building while construction is completed on a second middle school at the former Zemmer Junior High School site.

The opening of a new school, the move of Lapeer Community High School and the Kids & Co. program to new facilities, as well as the transfer of fifth and sixth grade Murphy Elementary students to the Rolland-Warner Middle School campus has caused some telephone number juggling.

The phone number for Zemmer Junior High School at the new Rolland-Warner Middle School campus remains the same as at the old site, (810) 667-2413.

Parents of Murphy Elementary School fifth and sixth graders attending classes at Rolland-Warner Middle School during the 2009-2010 school year, should also call the (810) 667-2413 to reach Murphy staff at that location.

The Kids & Co. program, which has moved from its previous home at the Cramton facility on Lake Nepessing to the Rolland-Warner Middle School campus at 333 Demille Boulevard, can be reached at (810) 667-2454, which is the same number as previous years.

A new fiber connection is needed to transfer Lapeer Community High School’s number, (810) 667-2453, to its new home at Cramton. That connection is expected to be completed soon.

Mr. Bill Gavette honored for volunteer tutoring program at three District schools

Mr. Bill Gavette, a District parent, was honored by the Board of Education for his efforts to bring after-school tutoring programs to a number of District schools and his volunteer efforts in several other areas.

Mr. Gavette was presented with a Certificate of Recognition at the Board of Education meeting Thursday, September 3rd.

In addition to his after-school tutoring work at Maple Grove Elementary School, Zemmer Junior High School and Lapeer East High School, Mr. Gavette set up a website for the Zemmer and Lapeer East school band programs.

“I want to thank the Board of Education for the opportunity to make a difference,” Mr. Gavette told the Board.

Mr. Gavette has a son and daughter attending Lapeer East High School.

Lapeer East Cross Country team raises $4,525 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

Wearing shirts with the logo ‘Running Because We Care’ the Lapeer East Cross Country Team ran three miles through the rain on Friday, August 28th, in support of a team member with cystic fibrosis. The 32-member team, along with Coaches Duane Machesney, Manny Schmidt and Noelle Grignani, raised $4,425 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The team would like to thank Hometown Pharmacy of Lapeer, All Star Promotions, T-N-T Fork Lift, Dr. Paul Lepor, Muir Brothers, Walmart and Mancino’s for the support they gave to this event, as well as the many, many family members and friends whose donations made the event such a great success.

Lapeer West wins overtime thriller in Fenton

A gutsy overtime call to go for a two-point conversion gave Lapeer West a 28-27 victory at Fenton.

The see-saw regulation battle ended in a 20-20 tie, but West prevailed with the two-point conversion in the first overtime.

Parents will choose whether students see President's message

(The following message has been sent to the Principals in the District)

We have received several phone calls at A&SC regarding the President's Address to students on Tuesday. Phone calls have been passionate on both ends of the spectrum. You received a message earlier today from Nick indicating that there is no possible way for the tech department to get things configured for Tuesday. However, it certainly would be possible for individual teachers to access it in their classrooms.

In light of the high parent interest this is generating (both positive and negative), and in light of the fact that it is the first day of school and we have limited ability to communicate with parents prior to the address, I have asked Nick to record a copy of the presentation for viewing at a later date, except for selected secondary classes, such as social studies, where the subject may be appropriate.

This will allow you to communicate with families regarding whether or not they want their children to see it as well as have time to plan and prepare for the setting that it is shown. It will ultimately be up to individual buildings to determine if and when they want to show it to students. If you do choose to show it, you need to provide the opportunity for parents to request that their children not participate.

Parents that contact the A&SC building will be informed that we are not broadcasting it on Tuesday, but that students may have the opportunity to view it in the building at a later date. Parents will be notified of the presentation and will have the opportunity to exclude their child if they choose to do so. Any further questions regarding details of the viewing should be directed their childs building.

Meijer, Lapeer County Community Foundation provide students with backpacks

One-hundred and fifty students will start the year out with a new backpack and school supplies thanks to Meijer, students from the Lapeer County Community Foundation and donations from the community at large.

Meijer director Sandy Molosky said the store met and exceeded its goal this year. Through a donation, the store was able to provide backpacks and supplies for an additional 50 backpacks.

Meijer is happy to reach out to Lapeer students in need of backpacks and school supplies. The backpack program has provided a way for the Michigan-based store to give back to the community through the years.

“It’s been a pleasure working with the Lapeer County Community Foundation providing much-needed school supplies to children in our area,” said Mrs. Molosky.

Students working with the Youth Advisory Council of the LCCF took on the project for the first time last year.

“Meijer and the LA View, which ran an ad for free, helped make the project possible,” said Ashley White, of the LCCF. “Principals provided the names of families and children needing the backpacks.”

Students involved in the LCCF are involved in four service projects each year.

Cramton re-dedication ceremony and open house set for September 22nd

A re-dedication ceremony and open house at Cramton school, 1220 Lake Nepessing Road, is planned for Tuesday, September 22, 2009.

The ceremony to dedicate Cramton as the new home of the Lapeer Community High School will take place at 6 p.m. with the open house following until 7:30 p.m. The public and press are invited to attend.

The Cramton school is named for Louis C. Cramton, a native of Hadley Township and Republican representative who served in Congress from 1913 to 1931 representing Lapeer and the Thumb Region.

A new building and a new outdoor playground await pre-school children in the Early Childhood wing of the new Rolland-Warner Middle School.

The Great Start Readiness Program, which is a free program for families who meet qualifying factors, and LCS Preschool, which is based on tuition, will be offered. Both programs are half day programs.

Preschool programs offer developmental training that will include structured activities that focus on Kindergarten Readiness Skills. Preschool classes begin the week of September 14th.

Rolland-Warner Middle School officially opened in ribbon-cutting, open house

The realization of the first half of the ‘dream’ of two new middle schools at the Lapeer Community Schools was celebrated by about 700 people at the ribbon-cutting and official opening of the new Rolland-Warner Middle School Thursday, August 27th.

Rolland-Warner Middle School is the first of two remodeled and expanded buildings in the District financed through a May 2007 bond issue passed by the voters. The new middle school is the first large building project in the District since the completion of Lapeer East High School in 1976.

“Today we are celebrating part one of the middle school dream, the completion of the first middle school. The name chosen for this building is especially fitting as it recognizes the work of two long time Lapeer educators who set the path for us as we embark on this new era of education in Lapeer,” said Superintendent Debbie Thompson. “It is our responsibility to carry forth, not only with beautiful school buildings, but with a quality educational program that serves as a spring board for future academic success.”

“Today is not only a special day for Lapeer Community Schools, but more importantly, it symbolizes what an entire community can accomplish when it works together for the common good of its people,” said Board of Education President William Laidlaw. “Strong communities revolve around its public school system and investments in their future. We should feel privileged to reside in a community that values education and invests in tomorrow’s leaders.”

Rolland-Warner was completely wired for 21st Century technology and includes state-of-the-art science and computer laboratories, as well as a new media center.

For the 2009-2010 school year, Rolland-Warner will be home to Zemmer Junior High School’s seventh grade students, as well as fifth and sixth graders from Murphy Elementary School.
With the completion next summer of the new Zemmer Middle School at the former junior high school site, the District will officially open two middle schools serving sixth, seventh and eighth grade students from the District.

Good evening and welcome to Rolland-Warner Middle School. On behalf of the Board of Education, I’d like to extend a warm welcome and special thank you for your attendance.

Today is not only a special day for Lapeer Community Schools, but more importantly, it symbolizes what an entire community can accomplish when it works together for the common good of its people. Strong communities revolve around its public school system and investments in their future. We should feel privileged to reside in a community that values education and invests in tomorrow’s leaders.

To the taxpayers of this community, we extend our sincere thanks for your investment in our schools. Your trust and support in this Board of Education is deeply appreciated. I can assure each of you that your investment will impact every student in this district, providing the necessary technology and learning environments that assist our valued staff in providing excellent educational opportunities for those that pass through our doors.

Because of your support and generosity, we are building two new middle schools, making significant improvements in all buildings, providing much needed technology and media centers, replacing outdated furniture, and constructing new science labs in both of our high schools. We are stretching your hard-earned dollars as far as possible to ensure we provide the highest quality education for every student we have the privilege of serving.

To the members of Barton Mallow and French and Associates, we extend our thanks for your hard work and creativity in bringing our older buildings back to life, providing state of the art educational facilities at an affordable level to our taxpayers. Your efforts will be proudly displayed to the community in the tour that follows this ceremony.

To my fellow board members and our administration, I want to commend you for your perseverance in making today possible. After two devastating bond defeats in 2005 and 2006, we continued to seek a solution to our facility problems when most would have given up.

By creating a viable process that included staff, students, parents and community members, we were able to garner the support needed to pass the first bond issue in more than thirty years. Through that process, setting personal preferences aside, we listened to our community and proposed an affordable solution that was overwhelmingly supported.

Because of your dedicated efforts to our students, it is a privilege to serve as your board president, and I am excited to work along side of each you to realize the vision we have for our district and community.

Six months ago, our board had the privilege of honoring Doris Rolland and Abi Warner, wife of the late Ron Warner, after whom this facility is named. Both women spoke passionately about education and the vision they had for our new middle school program.

Their words left a lasting impression on all of us. Mrs. Rolland went so far as to challenge our board and superintendent to create a middle school program that will someday be nationally recognized. As we celebrate new facilities, technology, and educational resources furnished through the passage of this bond, we must never lose focus on curriculum and instruction within the classroom that drives student achievement levels to new heights.

Our board’s focus will always be on supporting our outstanding staff in developing a quality K through 12 program that will allow every student the opportunity to be the best they can be. We have the staff, the facilities, and the resources to make that dream a reality, and I am confident that we will succeed.

As we tour the new Rolland-Warner facility this evening, I encourage each of you to realize what can be done with older facilities to create learning environments that are conducive to student success. As an advocate of public education, I would be remiss in not reminding each of us that this bond realizes only the first half of the long range facility master plan our Board of Education adopted in 2004.

When the economy improves and our student population increases, I am hopeful that in the near future we can once again begin a collaborative process that places an affordable bond issue before us, providing an equitable learning environment for every student in our district. With creative thinking, good process, and community input, I believe this goal will someday be a reality.

Thank you for your support of Lapeer Community Schools and enjoy the tour of your community’s new school.

"May 8, 2007 was an important day for the Lapeer community and Lapeer Community Schools in particular. On that day the community passed a bond supporting renovations to our schools, the infusion of much needed technology into our classrooms, the replacement of some of our most outdated furniture, and most importantly, the creation of two middle schools by renovating two of our existing buildings.

It was a long time coming but the passage of the bond spoke of the community’s recognition that education is essential for our future, and providing quality learning environments for our students helps our students become independent and confident learners for the future.

Today we are celebrating part one of the middle school dream, the completion of the first middle school. The name chosen for this building is especially fitting as it recognizes the work of two long time Lapeer educators who set the path for us as we embark on this new era of education in Lapeer.

Doris Rolland was a teacher and principal at the Woodside School at Oakdale, the original school on this site. She also was director of special education for the Oakdale facility. At the time our last new building opened she was serving on the Board of Education.

Ron Warner retired from Lapeer Community Schools as the assistant superintendent. He began his long career with the district as a teacher and then served in numerous administrative positions. Ron was instrumental in the annexation and consolidation of the former one-room school houses into the district that we know today.

Both of these individuals devoted their lives to the children of Lapeer. They were committed to providing excellent educational opportunities to all students because they believed that all students could learn.

It is our responsibility to carry forth, not only with beautiful school buildings, but with a quality educational program that serves as a spring board for future academic success. Our commitment to the community is that we will challenge ourselves and our students to reach for the top, to excel in the classroom, and go forth prepared for the challenges of a future that may not be imagined this afternoon.

To start our program I would like to ask Christopher Keller to come forward and lead us in the pledge of allegiance. Chris is an incoming 7th grader. After the pledge members of the East and West bands will play the Star Spangled Banner.

Before I begin recognizing the various dignitaries who are here today I would like to recognize the custodial staff of Lapeer Community Schools. They have worked tirelessly to get this building ready for this evening. They always want our buildings to look spectacular and tonight is no exception."

Lapeer East Marching Band alumni invited to march, play in Homecoming halftime show

Want a chance to dust off that old trumpet or other band instrument, get out on the field and feel the excitement of the crowd one more time?

Lapeer East High School Band invites alumni to come home and play with the marching band at the school’s Homecoming Game against Kearsley High School on Friday, September 18th.

Alumni will report to the Lapeer East Band Room at 2:30 p.m. to check in and get music and instruments, if needed.

There will be a full band rehearsal at 3 p.m. on the marching field. Alumni will need to return to the band room at 6:15 p.m. and be ready to march to the game with the 2009-10 members of the Lapeer East Marching Band. They will sit behind the band in the stands and play during half-time.

Bring your old Lapeer East marching band T-shirt or wear something green and gold and a pair of jeans.

2009 Distinguished Hall of Honor selected

A high school teacher, a college professor and author, a U.S. Army marksman and a newspaper man and author are the selections to the 2009 Distinguished Alumni Hall of Honor.

The late Mr. John M. Carlisle, Class of 1922, a Detroit News reporter; Dr. Frank J. Irgang, Class of 1939, a decorated World War II veteran and professor and later chairman of the Industrial Arts Department of San Diego State University; the late Ms. Barbara J. Hile, Class of 1952, a distinguished Army sharpshooter and the first, and only, woman member of the United States Army Rifle Team; and Mr. Michael A. White, a retired Lapeer East High School teacher, member of the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Department Marine Division and Emergency Medical Specialist with the Lapeer Area Ambulance Company, were selected this summer for the honor.

The four will be inducted into the Hall of Honor during a ceremony at 3 p.m., Sunday, November 8th in the Lapeer East High School auditorium.

Lapeer West girls' golf team finishes 3rd in 21-team field at Lapeer Summer Tune-up tourney

A 21-team field at the Lapeer Summer Tune Up golf tournament saw a great team performance by the Lapeer West girls' golf team and great individual performances by golfers on both teams.

Lapeer East finished 14th at the tournament which was held at the Lapeer Country Club.

Lapeer West's Catherine Benscoter tied for third with an 84, Lapeer East's Keely Turczyn was in sixth place with an 86, and Lapeer West's Kim Brown shot a 87 to tie for seventh place in the individual competition.

Lapeer East, Lapeer West and Zemmer Junior High School orientations set

Lapeer Community Schools would like to remind parents and students of the orientation schedule for Zemmer Junior High School, Lapeer East and Lapeer West High Schools. Orientation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lapeer East and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lapeer West, except for the make-up session, on the dates below. Lapeer West’s make-up orientation is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lapeer East is located at 933 S. Saginaw Street and Lapeer West is at 170 Millville Road. Zemmer Junior High is located at the new Rolland-Warner Middle School campus, 333 DeMille Boulevard.

Eighth grade orientation is Tuesday, August 25th.

Ninth and tenth grade orientation is Wednesday, August 26th.

Eleventh and twelfth grade orientation is Thursday, August 27th.

A make-up orientation date will be held on Monday, August 31st.

Zemmer Junior High School, located at Rolland-Warner Middle School, 333 DeMille Boulevard, will hold its orientation on the following schedule.

Important information for parents, students and staff about the H1N1 virus

Due to concerns over a possible nationwide outbreak of the H1N1 virus, Lapeer Community Schools has been asked by the Lapeer County Health Department to more closely track the reasons for student absences this year.

According the LCHD, influenza, or the ‘flu,’ is often misdiagnosed. For example, there is no such disease as “stomach flu.” Illnesses involving no appetite, nausea, upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea is most likely gastroenteritis, which is an inflammation of the stomach caused by a variety of viruses, or less commonly, bacteria.

“True flu,” is a disease that begins in the upper respiratory system, similar to a cold, with fever, body aches and pains. The disease moves quickly down the chest where it becomes bronchitis or pneumonia. A “true flu” lasts about 7 to 10 days and makes a person feel miserable.

There can be nausea, vomiting and diarrhea from the flu in infants and small children caused by mucous draining down the backs of their throats into the stomach.

As a result of the LCHD memo, parents should be alerted to a series of questions we have been asked to inquire about when a child calls in sick so the LCHD can track the disease.

· Does the child have a fever? How high?
· Is the child sick to their stomach, in the bathroom a lot?
· Are they congested, achy, feeling and acting droopy or sick?
· Have they been around others with the same symptoms?
The LCHD has also asked that students not return to school until they have not had a fever for 24 hours without taking any Tylenol or other fever-reducing medicine.
There are common sense ways to help prevent the spread of the disease:— Cover your mouth and nose, preferably with a tissue, when you cough or sneeze. Immediately dispose of the tissue after its use.— Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.— Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth to help prevent the spread of germs.

For Immediate Release: Several Ice Skating Talents will take the Ice during Polar Palace's Skating Exhibition

Lapeer, MI -- On Sunday, September 13th, the Polar Palace is hosting an exciting Skating Exhibition consisting of several ice skating talents.

The community is invited to visit the Polar Palace between 2pm and 5pm and show their support as skaters from the rink's Learn-to-Skate program "Bop to the Top" in Polar Palace's own High School Musical performance.

Enjoy beauty on ice as local synchro teams and individual skaters perform their talents to choreography and music -- from pair skating and ice dancing to freestyle and figures.

Learn about the various field moves from our commentator as local skaters and instructors perform on-ice demonstrations.

Especially exciting, and thanks to the USA Disabled Hockey Section, the Polar Palace is able to introduce the Lapeer and surrounding communities to the sport of sled hockey, by bringing several sleds and sticks for use during the Exhibition.

Michigan's only adult sled hockey team, Michigan Sled Dogs, will be joining the Lapeer East Hockey Team volunteers in a "mini" game of sled hockey.

Research has found that anyone with a disability that would prevent them from participating in "stand-up hockey" is a candidate for sled hockey. It is a sport that allows players with mobility limitations (amputees, and able-bodied people with knee, leg or hip injuries) to play, and requires great upper-body strength, balance, and the ability to handle the puck.

"Even able-bodied individuals enjoy the sport of sled hockey," stated Marc Henretta, Michigan Sled Dog Captain. "We are very excited to bring awareness of the sport to the Polar Palace."

The Exhibition will close with a free public skate between 4:15pm - 5pm where the community can meet, greet and skate with our USFS Mascot, Snow Plow Sam, along with a few of our Michigan Sled Dog team members.

Other activities include a 50-50 raffle whereby 50% of the proceeds will go to the Lapeer East Hockey Team, in addition to the raffling off of exciting gift certificates from Louie's Sports Tavern and the Polar Palace.

Informational tables will furnish the community with a range of information as well as a Fall registration table for Polar Palace's Learn-to-Skate and Learn-to-Play Hockey programs.

Palace is located in the historical city of Lapeer at 3301 Davison Road. The complex is a State-of-the-Art ice skating center housing two NHL regulation ice surfaces with seating for over 1,000 spectators.

Sled Hockey, according to USA Hockey, Sled (or Sledge) Hockey was invented in Sweden at a rehabilitation center in the early 1980's by a group of Swedes with a physical disability. Despite their disability, they wanted to continue playing ice hockey.

With this somewhat unknown sport, players sit in specially designed seats attached to a lightweight frame with hockey skate blades underneath. Each player carries two sticks, both have a metal pic on one end for propelling and a hockey blade on the other end for handling the puck.

Sled hockey provides an opportunity for many types of physical disabilities. The Polar Palace team hopes there is an opportunity available to someday house its own Sled Hockey team.

One Kid...One Sled...One Shot...A Hockey Player for Life! Program.

This program is designed to help bring new players into the sport of sled hockey by initiating a loaner sled program for rinks and organizations who want to conduct "Learn-to-Play Sled Hockey" clinics but were prevented from doing so due to the lack of sleds and sticks.

Through a grant from the USA Hockey Foundation, the USA Disabled Hockey Section through One Kid...One Sled...One Shot...A Hockey Player for Life! Program has purchased 25 sleds of various sizes to be loaned out to rinks and organizations to be used to conduct clinics or demonstrations.

The Michigan Sled Dogs are the only adult sled hockey team in the state. Their home rink is the Great Lakes Sports City Ice Arena located in Fraser. Currently, the team consists of twelve male athletes and one female athlete with a variety of disabilities including amputees, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy and spinal cord injuries.

The teammates range in age from fourteen to their mid-forties. Five volunteers make up the coaching team working diligently to help each athlete reach their full potential. The Michigan Sled Dogs are entering their 5th season as a team.

Lapeer East publications students win camera outfit for winning yearbook design

Lapeer East publications students designed their way to a new camera at a recent yearbook camp at Lake Fenton High School.

The students won a Canon Rebel camera, a case and a 2 GB memory card as their prize for taking first place in the design of their yearbook cover and page mock ups at the three-day camp.

East senior Shelby Saelens, editor, and assistant editors; Danielle Schultz, junior; Jessica Peck, junior; Averi Skop, junior; and Kylee Richardson, senior, attended photo shop classes, seminars in formatting and editing, thematic work, color and layout clinics, as well as business management mini-sessions.

High school students from 30 area schools participated in the camp.

“The students learned a lot and their efforts at the camp bode well for the publication of the school’s next yearbook,” said teacher Laura Matthews, advisor for the publications class. Mrs. Matthews is assisted by Mrs. Jan McKeachie.

Rolland-Warner Ribbon-Cutting and Community Open House 6 p.m. August 27th

Completion of the District’s first major school building project in more than 30 years will be celebrated at a Ribbon-Cutting and Community Open House at the new Rolland-Warner Middle School, 333 DeMille Boulevard in Lapeer at 6 p.m. August 27th.

The public is invited to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony and tour the building at the open house that follows. Refreshments will be served.

Rolland-Warner Middle School was named for former Lapeer teacher and administrator Ronald Warner and former Woodside principal Doris Rolland. Mrs. Abi Warner, the wife of the late Ronald Warner, and Mrs. Rolland are scheduled to be at the event.

Construction at the site began in late May 2008 following a ground-breaking ceremony on May 20, 2008.

Reconstruction is currently under way at the former Zemmer Junior High School site. Rolland-Warner Middle School and Zemmer Middle School are scheduled to open to sixth, seventh and eighth grade students in the fall of 2010.

“This exciting event marks a new era in the education of children at Lapeer Community Schools,” said Superintendent Debbie Thompson. “We appreciate the voters of our community providing this beautiful and much needed facility for our District.”

French students visit Lapeer for three weeks

It was a study of America, Lapeer style for six French students.

Five Lapeer West families and one Lapeer East family hosted six students from Brittany, France during a three week exchange visit in July.

Two of the French students were making their second summer visits to Lapeer. The students were met at Detroit Metropolitan Airport on July 9th and returned home on July 30th. More photos of the students and their host families are at the District's photo gallery.

Lapeer West French teacher Jeanine LeMieux is the local coordinator for the exchange program. Mrs. LeMieux has coordinated the family visits for the French students for more than five years and for students from Spain for nearly twenty years.

Students not only practice their language skills, but often become good friends. One local student, Belle Hammontree, returned to France for a four week visit with the student, Ocean Joly, that she and her parents, Beth and John Willette hosted.

The McCarthy family, Denis and Lynn and their daughter, Caley, hosted Simone Gouranton. During Simone’s stay he worked out and played with a Lapeer soccer team and traveled to Florida with the McCarthy’s for a week of sun and fun.

Erica Miller and her family hosted French student Charlene Perrudin. It was the second student in the past three years the Miller’s invited to stay with them.

“Charlene Perrudin was by far, their favorite,” LeMieux said.

West student Abby Case, and her parents, Bryan and Kelly Case, hosted Claire Delarra.

“Abby hopes to travel to France soon to visit Claire,” LeMieux said.

French student Pierre Cotrel stayed with West student Justin Harris and his family. West student Jessica Phelps and her family hosted Claire Leveque.

Lapeer Community High School gets new facility, leader for 2009-2010

Lapeer Community High School, a vital program of Lapeer Community Schools, will enter the year 2009-2010 with a new building and a new leader.

Kevin Walters, former principal at Lapeer West High School, was selected to be principal at the alternative high school in its new location at the remodeled facilities at Cramton.

Tim Zeeman, recently the assistant principal and athletic director at Lapeer West High School, will serve as acting principal of Lapeer West High School during the 2009-2010 school year. A new assistant principal will replace Zeeman.

Walters, who has a wealth of experience dealing with at-risk students and recent administrative leadership experience, will bring those valuable assets to Lapeer Community High School.

In his 15-years at LCS, Walters has been a teacher, an elementary school principal and principal at West since 2005. He has a Bachelor’s and Masters degree from Central Michigan University.

Zeeman joined the District in 1996 taught English at Lapeer East until 2005 when he was appointed assistant principal and athletic director at Lapeer West. He has a Bachelor’s degree from Albion College and a Master’s degree from Marygrove College.

“Lapeer Community High School serves a critical role in the education of a unique, but important, group of students in our District,” said Superintendent Debbie Thompson. “We need a leader at Lapeer Community High School who can build and improve the important mission of that school.”

“Tim Zeeman’s appointment to the acting principal position will provide the excellent leadership at Lapeer West High School,” Mrs. Thompson said. “Tim brings his own wealth of experience in the District, community and in leadership at Lapeer West High School.”

Lapeer West girls' tennis standout now helping with Ohio State University tennis team

The Flint Journal's Greg Tunnicliff has posted a feature on 1998 Lapeer West High School graduate Monica Rincon, a two-time All-State tennis selection at West and a All-American during her tennis career at Ohio State University.

The Flint Journal outlines how Monica is giving back to the OSU tennis players as a volunteer coach.

Welcome Principal Jennifer Torok to Turrill Elementary School in the fall

Lapeer Community Schools welcomes Mrs. Jennifer Torok as the new principal at Turrill Elementary School in the fall.

Mrs. Torok comes to Lapeer from Davison Community Schools where her last assignment was as a literacy coach at Hahn Intermediate School.

During her nine-year career at Davison, Mrs. Torok was a literacy coach at the elementary schools, as well as at Hahn and taught gifted and talented students at Central Elementary School and previously taught second grade.

She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan – Flint, earned a master’s degree in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College and earned a Specialist’s Degree in educational leadership at Oakland University in June 2009.

She was a graduate of Davison High School and currently lives in Davison with her husband, Ron, and two children, Brennyn and Kaylee. The family loves to camp in their travel trailer and attend their children’s sporting events.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with students, parents and staff at Turrill Elementary,” said Mrs. Torok. “The staff has a reputation for hard work and dedication. I feel very privileged to be joining their effort to help students learn and become more successful.”

New building, playground await children at Lapeer Community Schools preschool program

A new building and a new outdoor playground await pre-school children in the Early Childhood wing of the new Rolland-Warner Middle School.

The Great Start Readiness Program, which is a free program for families who meet qualifying factors, and LCS Preschool, which is based on tuition, will be offered. Both programs are half day programs.

Preschool programs offer developmental training that will include structured activities that focus on Kindergarten Readiness Skills. Preschool classes begin the week of September 14th.

Attica Township Food Bank opens to help township residents

As a public service, the Lapeer Community Schools is pleased to post the following information for the community:

Attica United Methodist Church announces the Attica Food Bank, an ongoing food assistance program for township residents beginning Monday, August 10, the second Monday of the month. Food will be given out to those in need from 2 to 4 p.m.

The goal of the program is to offer supplemental food assistance to those in need who live in Attica Township. Documentation such as a driver’s license showing township residency is required. Guests are asked to also bring documentation (social security card, report card) showing the number of children living in their household and any other documentation (pay stub, etc.) that helps verifies need. The Attica Food Bank will serve township residents who have a Bridge Card, those who are over the age of 65 and those with vouchers from Love, INC.

The Attica Food Bank is a program supported through the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. For every dollar donated, Attica Food Bank is able to purchase $14 worth of food. All donations go toward food purchase and donations may be sent to: Attica Food Bank, P.O. Box 3, Attica, MI 48412 or in care of Attica United Methodist, 27 Elk Lake Road, Attica, MI 48412.

LCS Michigan Merit Examination scores continue rise

Lapeer Community Schools’ students met or exceeded State average Michigan Merit Examination scores in all but one subject and improved its own year-over-year scores in all, but one, content areas in 2009.

In social studies, Lapeer students scored five percent higher than the State average; in reading Lapeer students were four percent higher; in English Language Arts, students bested the State average by two percent; in Science by one percent; was at the State average in Math and was one percent below the State average in writing.

More encouraging was the continued improvement in scores year-over-year from 2007 to 2009.

Reading scores were five percent higher in 2009, five percent higher in Writing, four percent higher in English Language Arts, one percent higher in Math, even in Science and one percent lower in Social Studies.

“While we are pleased by the continued improvement in overall test scores we continue to focus on increasing achievement for all students as we move forward with our curriculum and teacher professional development,” said Kim Seifferly, Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

Zemmer teachers visit Rolland-Warner, custodians work together to clean new school

Although there is a lot of work yet to be done, much of the interior and exterior construction work at Rolland-Warner Middle School is complete.

A small group of teachers stopped over Wednesday morning, July 29th, to organize their classrooms and prepare for fall classes.

A team of custodians is working hard to clean up after 14 months of construction work at the new facility. They stopped briefly for a photo. Turrill Elementary School Summer Camp kids enjoy roller skating field trip

Turrill Elementary School Summer Camp kids enjoyed a morning field trip to the Lapeer Skating Center for a little fun and physical education.

The field trip was a reward for all the hard work the students are doing this summer in school.

Parking lot construction work on making a safer pick up and drop off for students at Mayfield Elementary School is underway at the school on Plum Creek Road in Mayfield Township.

When complete, there will be additional parking, a new bus loop around the back of the building and a new pick up and drop off scheme at the school.
